Narrative:

Original clearance was runway 36R dartz 2 tnv vuh as filed. We had a runway change due to weather for runway 31L. High winds; windshear; snow; rain; low visibility; winds 28 KTS with gust to 45 KTS. We used max power; wing and engine anti-ice on. New clearance was for vectors dartz intersection climb to and maintain 10;000 ft. CDU did not allow dartz 2 departure with runway 31L. Departure had to be deleted to select runway 31L. After takeoff; ATC cleared us direct dartz. With no dartz departure available; next fix was vuh. After selecting and executing direct dartz; discontinuity was closed with next fix (vuh). After crossing dartz; ATC asked if we were direct tornn. We replied; no. ATC asked for our heading; then assigned us heading 165. A few moments later we were cleared direct bilee; direct vuh; flight plan route. Evidently ATC was expecting us to fly the remainder of the dartz 2; after crossing dartz intersection. The interesting thing is that this departure is not available when departing from runway 31L.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: Air carrier crew initially departing DFW Runway 36R and the DARTZ2 departure is switched to Runway 31L with vectors to DARTZ. The flight crew fails to understand that they are to fly the TNV transition after DARTZ and a track deviation occurs. The DARTZ2 is not compatible with Runway 31L and cannot be entered into the FMC making some manual waypoint entries necessary but not accomplished.
