Narrative:

After takeoff we preceded to fly the runway 24 TEB6 departure. The SID was briefed that we would select navigation/VNAV after takeoff to comply with altitude restrictions. After gear retraction navigation was selected and vertical speed was inadvertently selected. Altitude selected on altitude preselect was 1;500. Due to high winds which caused a very bumpy ride and vs being selected instead of VNAV we missed the level off height of 1;500 by 300 to 400 ft. The SID required us to level off at 1;500 on a heading of 240. Then turn right to 280 heading and maintain 1;500 ft until crossing 4.5 DME then climb to 2;000. We recognized the error and started a decent to 1;500 at which point ATC questioned us and then told us to climb to 2;000.

Title: A CL604 Captain reported incorrectly selecting vertical speed instead of VNAV during the TEB6 Departure and then overshooting the level off altitude by 300-400 FT because the autopilot did not capture 1;500 FT as planned.
