Narrative:
Clearance out of bur was (SID) elmo 3 elmo intersection direct pomona via 164 degree right to V23 to seal beach direct oceanside. As we got to elmo intersection we started to fly (turn) towards seal beach VOR (the published transition). Part way through the turn we caught our error and turned back towards pomona. Right then the controller saw what was happening and told us to turn back, he also gave a traffic alert, a heavy transport we saw as we came out of the clouds. My suggestion would be to abolish SID transition that we never or seldom use. The seal beach transition is not used because it penetrates right through the lax TCA. I have never had it issued when filed.
