Narrative:
C172 departed ads runway 15 on IFR flight plan. Data tag auto acquired over departure end of runway 15 then dropped to splat and altitude only. Splat still indicated correct transponder code. Data tag re-acquired approximately 4 radar sweeps later. This is a recurring problem that has been reported before. This problem can and has led to controller being charged with operational deviation/error. Recommendation; fix the ARTS so that data tags do not drop after auto acquire.
Original NASA ASRS Text
