Narrative:
Shortly after liftoff; both pilots heard air/wind noise behind the cockpit. This is not terribly unusual; as the coffeepot area often emits these types of sounds on occasion during climbout; so we continued the climb. Passing through 4000 feet; the door unlock light was noticed on the master caution panel. Non-flying pilot looked back at the main cabin door and observed that the handle was raised slightly above the horizontal/closed-and-locked position. We alerted ATC of our intention to return to the departure field; but did not declare an emergency. Approach and landing were uneventful. Door unlock light was not on prior to takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: After takeoff a BE400's DOOR UNLOCK light illuminated. The handle was observed out of the locked position so the crew returned to land without declaring an emergency.
