Narrative:
While getting 'check out' in an aircraft by a CFI, we overflew an uncontrolled airport and came within approximately 500' from a high fixed wing aircraft. The CFI spotted the aircraft before I did and initiated a climb for further sep. Although a collision was not imminent, we were closer to the other aircraft than I would have liked. Factors include our failure to announce the overflt on unicom and possibly a higher than published pattern altitude being flown by the other aircraft. He appeared to be downwind. Lessons learned: remain well clear (vertically and horizontally of uncontrolled airports). Announce intentions over unicom.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX TWO GA SMA ACFT OVER NON TWR ARPT UNICOM CTAF.
Narrative: WHILE GETTING 'CHK OUT' IN AN ACFT BY A CFI, WE OVERFLEW AN UNCONTROLLED ARPT AND CAME WITHIN APPROX 500' FROM A HIGH FIXED WING ACFT. THE CFI SPOTTED THE ACFT BEFORE I DID AND INITIATED A CLB FOR FURTHER SEP. ALTHOUGH A COLLISION WAS NOT IMMINENT, WE WERE CLOSER TO THE OTHER ACFT THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED. FACTORS INCLUDE OUR FAILURE TO ANNOUNCE THE OVERFLT ON UNICOM AND POSSIBLY A HIGHER THAN PUBLISHED PATTERN ALT BEING FLOWN BY THE OTHER ACFT. HE APPEARED TO BE DOWNWIND. LESSONS LEARNED: REMAIN WELL CLR (VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY OF UNCONTROLLED ARPTS). ANNOUNCE INTENTIONS OVER UNICOM.
