Narrative:
Established on 45 degree entry to left downwind for runway 28 at east hampton. Just prior to turning downwind, observed small aircraft Y (cream color) climbing at my 12:30 position, low. Made evasive climbing turn to the left. Other aircraft may have also turned to left. Altitude at time was 1100' MSL, estimate 1/4 mi south of centerline of 10-28. Situation: unicom announcing runway 28 in use. I did overfly airport at 2000' prior to pattern entry. Winds estimated 290-300 degrees at 10-15 KTS. My intentions announced on 122.7; i.e., 45 degree left downwind entry for runway 28. Traffic was 1 aircraft on downwind for 28 already and did call in on unicom to that effect previously. Third aircraft (near miss) was not heard to announce anything on unicom. Was observed to continue after near miss to climb out turning left and head off to the north. After landing, I asked unicom whether any aircraft was either observed to have just taken off on runway 22 or to have announced intentions to do so over unicom. Answers to both inquiries were no. Problem: I do not believe small aircraft Y could have reached 1100' if it took off on runway 22 at the point where the near miss occurred. I was almost over the approach end of 4 when the encounter occurred. My opinion is that he made a go around on runway 22 after realizing everyone else was using runway 28. Solution: announce intentions on radio and stay with the traffic flow at uncontrolled airports--and look!

Title: CLOSE PROX 2 GA SMA OVER NON TWR ARPT. REPORTER WAS USING CTAF, THE OTHER ACFT WAS NOT.
Narrative: ESTABLISHED ON 45 DEG ENTRY TO LEFT DOWNWIND FOR RWY 28 AT EAST HAMPTON. JUST PRIOR TO TURNING DOWNWIND, OBSERVED SMA Y (CREAM COLOR) CLBING AT MY 12:30 POS, LOW. MADE EVASIVE CLBING TURN TO THE LEFT. OTHER ACFT MAY HAVE ALSO TURNED TO LEFT. ALT AT TIME WAS 1100' MSL, ESTIMATE 1/4 MI S OF CENTERLINE OF 10-28. SITUATION: UNICOM ANNOUNCING RWY 28 IN USE. I DID OVERFLY ARPT AT 2000' PRIOR TO PATTERN ENTRY. WINDS ESTIMATED 290-300 DEGS AT 10-15 KTS. MY INTENTIONS ANNOUNCED ON 122.7; I.E., 45 DEG LEFT DOWNWIND ENTRY FOR RWY 28. TFC WAS 1 ACFT ON DOWNWIND FOR 28 ALREADY AND DID CALL IN ON UNICOM TO THAT EFFECT PREVIOUSLY. THIRD ACFT (NEAR MISS) WAS NOT HEARD TO ANNOUNCE ANYTHING ON UNICOM. WAS OBSERVED TO CONTINUE AFTER NEAR MISS TO CLBOUT TURNING LEFT AND HEAD OFF TO THE N. AFTER LNDG, I ASKED UNICOM WHETHER ANY ACFT WAS EITHER OBSERVED TO HAVE JUST TAKEN OFF ON RWY 22 OR TO HAVE ANNOUNCED INTENTIONS TO DO SO OVER UNICOM. ANSWERS TO BOTH INQUIRIES WERE NO. PROB: I DO NOT BELIEVE SMA Y COULD HAVE REACHED 1100' IF IT TOOK OFF ON RWY 22 AT THE POINT WHERE THE NEAR MISS OCCURRED. I WAS ALMOST OVER THE APCH END OF 4 WHEN THE ENCOUNTER OCCURRED. MY OPINION IS THAT HE MADE A GAR ON RWY 22 AFTER REALIZING EVERYONE ELSE WAS USING RWY 28. SOLUTION: ANNOUNCE INTENTIONS ON RADIO AND STAY WITH THE TFC FLOW AT UNCONTROLLED ARPTS--AND LOOK!
