Narrative:
We had an inoperative APU; and were starting an engine at the gate. Received clearance to start engine one; and I called for the first officer to 'start 1' and we did. The first officer thought were cleared to start both; and then started number 2. Ground personnel on the headset told me to shut it down; and we immediately shut it down. It only rotated for about 3-5 seconds without any ignition; etc.
Original NASA ASRS Text
