Narrative:
Was doing closed traffic pattern operations. Was at the mid-field left downwind. There was another C172 ahead of us on downwind. Another C172 was approaching from the north and tower advised that aircraft to follow our aircraft. Tower confirmed several times that the aircraft to follow was the second C172 on downwind and not the first. Student was flying and pointed to traffic on final for the same runway. I looked to the left and confirmed that sighting and then scanned back to the right. I observed the conflicting traffic making a right turn to downwind in front of us. Separation was approximately 200 ft estimated. I immediately took controls from the student and initiated a left dive to avoid the other aircraft.
