Narrative:

After starting 3 engines first officer called ground control for permission to power back out of gate (sat). Ground control told us to leave power at idle and to hold because of aircraft to taxi behind us. We acknowledged hold and power at idle and I signaled ground crew man the hold signal. Aircraft parking brake was set entire time and all 3 engines were at idle entire time. We heard some conversation going between ground control and other aircraft concerning taxiing behind (us) and also about aircraft saying he would make a 180 degree turn in order to let us have some room to taxi out. After what seemed like 5 minutes I noticed the ground crew men who were holding up the wands in a cross (hold sign), looking aft of our aircraft, all of a sudden he ran back behind our aircraft. I opened up the left cockpit sliding window and looked after and saw an small aircraft high wing aircraft tipped up on its left wing with our ground crew men righting it back up. The small aircraft type aircraft appeared to be approximately no more than 30' aft of our exhaust with the nose of his aircraft pointed in a south to southeast direction tipped up on his left wing. Aircraft was obviously way too close to be taxiing behind large transport exhaust. Also, the wind was reported to be blowing from the north to northeast at 12 KTS gusting to 18 knots which may have compounded the problem. In addition there was construction being done on taxiway directly behind the area of our gate approximately 200' away from the rear of our aircraft.

Title: GA SMA TAXIED TOO CLOSE BEHIND AN LGT THAT WAS PARKED AT THE GATE WITH ENGINES RUNNING. JET BLAST ENCOUNTER CAUSED SMA TO TIP UP ON ITS LEFT WING.

Narrative: AFTER STARTING 3 ENGINES F/O CALLED GND CTL FOR PERMISSION TO POWER BACK OUT OF GATE (SAT). GND CTL TOLD US TO LEAVE PWR AT IDLE AND TO HOLD BECAUSE OF ACFT TO TAXI BEHIND US. WE ACKNOWLEDGED HOLD AND PWR AT IDLE AND I SIGNALED GND CREW MAN THE HOLD SIGNAL. ACFT PARKING BRAKE WAS SET ENTIRE TIME AND ALL 3 ENGINES WERE AT IDLE ENTIRE TIME. WE HEARD SOME CONVERSATION GOING BETWEEN GND CTL AND OTHER ACFT CONCERNING TAXIING BEHIND (US) AND ALSO ABOUT ACFT SAYING HE WOULD MAKE A 180 DEG TURN IN ORDER TO LET US HAVE SOME ROOM TO TAXI OUT. AFTER WHAT SEEMED LIKE 5 MINUTES I NOTICED THE GND CREW MEN WHO WERE HOLDING UP THE WANDS IN A CROSS (HOLD SIGN), LOOKING AFT OF OUR ACFT, ALL OF A SUDDEN HE RAN BACK BEHIND OUR ACFT. I OPENED UP THE LEFT COCKPIT SLIDING WINDOW AND LOOKED AFTER AND SAW AN SMA HIGH WING ACFT TIPPED UP ON ITS LEFT WING WITH OUR GND CREW MEN RIGHTING IT BACK UP. THE SMA TYPE ACFT APPEARED TO BE APPROX NO MORE THAN 30' AFT OF OUR EXHAUST WITH THE NOSE OF HIS ACFT POINTED IN A SOUTH TO SE DIRECTION TIPPED UP ON HIS LEFT WING. ACFT WAS OBVIOUSLY WAY TOO CLOSE TO BE TAXIING BEHIND LGT EXHAUST. ALSO, THE WIND WAS REPORTED TO BE BLOWING FROM THE NORTH TO NE AT 12 KTS GUSTING TO 18 KNOTS WHICH MAY HAVE COMPOUNDED THE PROBLEM. IN ADDITION THERE WAS CONSTRUCTION BEING DONE ON TAXIWAY DIRECTLY BEHIND THE AREA OF OUR GATE APPROX 200' AWAY FROM THE REAR OF OUR ACFT.
