Narrative:

After takeoff; we were unable to retract the landing gear. Shortly afterwards we received an ECAM for a left/G shock absorber fault. Flight director; autothrust and autopilots were lost as a result of the fault. After identification of the ECAM we contacted departure and advised them we were returning to the field. We were turned onto the downwind. QRH and ECAM procedures were completed. I advised the lead flight attendant; passengers; dispatch via ACARS; and station we were returning. The first officer flew an ILS to a normal landing and taxi in. Mechanical failure required return to departure airport.
