Narrative:

While in cruise at FL380 the right forward fuel boost pump failed. The QRH procedure was followed and I referenced the MEL for additional information. The MEL states that for this condition there is 5000 lbs of unusable fuel for landing. If we were to imbalance the fuel to the max allowable of 1500 lbs then the total unusable fuel is 8500 lbs. Our scheduled arrival fuel was 14;500 lbs which would have given us a usable arrival fuel load of 6;000 lbs. If we had kept the fuel in balance like we are supposed to then our usable arrival fuel load would only have been 4500 lbs. I diverted to a nearby airport; had the boost pump placed on MEL; added additional fuel to comply with the unusable fuel requirements and continued to destination. The QRH needs to reference the fact that there is unusable fuel in the event of a boost pump failure.
