Narrative:
Departed runway maximum power; first officer flying. At gear retraction we heard a loud bang. No yaw or vibration of note. High egt was noted on right hand engine. Aircraft leveled off and captain performed engine failure checklist. Engine at idle. Returned for an uneventful; overweight landing. After landing tower informed us of debris left on runway. Right hand engine was shut down at this time. After shutdown; fire crews reported smoke from right hand engine. Captain ordered fire handle pulled. Smoke dissipated; taxied to the gate.

Title: A B737-800 engine failed after takeoff. An emergency was declared and the aircraft was return to land with the engine at idle. After landing the crew was informed of runway debris from the engine at which time the engine was shutdown and the fire bottle fired because of reported smoke.
