Narrative:
At V1 on takeoff roll the aircraft struck one or more birds. The takeoff was continued and shortly after getting airborne a burning odor was noted by captain and first officer and reported by the flight attendants. Both engines appeared to be operating normally but the decision was made to return in case of damage which was not apparent to the flight crew. An emergency was declared and an overweight landing was accomplished without further incident. An additional note: the right engine N1 indicator was placarded inoperable. However; the lack of this engine instrument did not influence the actions taken; but was one less instrument used to analyze the engine operation.

Title: MD80 First Officer experienced a bird strike during takeoff after V1. A burning odor was noted and the decision made to return to the departure airport after declaring an emergency.
