Narrative:

Aircraft X was diverted to ZZZZ because of an engine problem. Normally an alert 2 would be implemented; having equipment and assistance standing by at the runway of intended landing. However; ZZZZ tower was never informed of the problem that aircraft X was having. Immediately after aircraft X landed; san juan cerap called and asked us if we were closing runway xx; which is normally done whenever an alert 2 is initiated. We asked ZZZZ cerap 'why'; and they responded; 'nevermind'. We asked the pilot of aircraft X to call the tower and the pilot verified that they diverted to ZZZZ because of the engine problem indication. Fortunately; the aircraft landed safely; but we should have been alerted. There should be a checklist or system of accountability to insure that vital ATC information is relayed to all of those concerned and or affected.

Title: Tower Controller described a diversion event when information regarding an aircraft equipment problem was not relayed as required from the RADAR environment to the Tower and no emergency equipment was called out.
