Narrative:
We were cleared for takeoff [and] I advanced the throttles to stabilize the power between 40-45% N1. Upon advancing throttles and calling for 'autoflight' there was a loud bang; the aircraft shuddered; and the left engine instruments indicated 0% N1; tgt spiked to 1;030 C. I aborted the takeoff and told the first officer to call the abort to the tower. We were not moving very fast so I was able to turn off of the runway [quickly]. I set the parking brake and made an announcement to the passengers; 'attention this is the captain; remain seated; remain seated.' at that time I told the first officer that we lost the left engine and shut off the left fuel switch. Tgt immediately started to decrease. Tower asked if we needed any assistance and I told them no. I asked to taxi on to the holding pad at the approach end of [the runway] to further assess the situation. I had the first officer run the checklist for compressor stall under the engine tab just to cover any missed items; even though it's more for in-flight compressor stalls. Tgt continued to decrease and I was satisfied that the situation had been taken care with no danger to passengers or crew. I made a brief announcement to the passengers about what happened and that we were returning to the gate to have maintenance take a look at the aircraft. We notified operations and requested a gate return; which was granted. Upon arriving at the gate; I told the passengers that we would not be able to take the airplane to [destination] and that we were going to change airplanes. We then tail-swapped to another aircraft without any incident; after we departed and had leveled off at cruise; I again gave a brief synopsis to the passengers about what had happened to the last aircraft. All of the passengers thanked us for getting them to [destination] safely.
