Narrative:
Aircraft was in level flight at FL390 when I took sector over from transferring controller. Two aircraft were on frequency. Briefing was given to me; although not recorded since we were transferring to handset operation. The pilot of said aircraft made a transmission which was unreadable. When asked to say again he said [he had a]loss of pressure and needed immediate decent. I issued discretion decent to 10;000 MSL; although I did not own any airspace below FL350. I quickly coordinated with sectors below me and asked them to do the same since I was unfamiliar with airspace 3 sectors below. ZDC center was also involved in this. The sector below me advised which frequency to put distressed aircraft on as well as local altimeter to use. I was confident in the short amount of time that all coordination was completed; however due to my lack of familiarity to airspace several stratums below mine and the make up of ZDC's low stratum airspace; I felt the need to submit report of events.
