Narrative:
Set thrust for standard power; 6 flaps; first officer pilot flying; V1 145 KTS. Just prior to 140 KTS. Very loud bang and aircraft drifted left. No master caution or master warning lights illuminated. I aborted the aircraft by 140 KTS. First officer immediately called for crash and rescue to escort and observe the aircraft. They never got the word; however an airport operations truck met us as we exited the runway at taxiway E12 and observed no smoke or fire. The operations truck followed us back to the gate. Passengers were deplaned at the gate and we waited for a replacement aircraft. Brakes temperatures rose to about 350 and after several minutes at the gate the left outboard main tire deflated. No damage noted. Upon inspection of the left engine the intake and first stage appeared normal; no damage to the engine cowl. The exhaust section had severe blade damage to all observable blades as well as engine pieces lying in the exhaust. Runway was closed for about 1.5 hours while crews picked up engine pieces. No injury. Number 4 flight attendant had a sore neck and headache along with vomiting after aircraft was deplaned. Paramedics were called to check her. She was replaced and she deadheaded to her base.
