Narrative:
Climbing through FL220 I was hand flying and felt several hard thumps and a rolling tendency of the plane. Hi vibration and hi egt warnings annunciated. I pulled throttle 1 back and called for a hi vibration check list since the reduction in power reduced the egt to within limits. I began organizing a return to [departure airport] while the pilot not flying ran the checklist. Within 2 to 3 minutes the egt began to rise with idle power and the engine began to surge again. The pilot not flying suggested the engine fire severe damage checklist and we did that. We declared an emergency and had an uneventful return.
