Narrative:
Departed and at 3000 ft AGL we noticed an acrid smell followed by a call from the flight attendants. They had dense smoke through out the cabin and fumes. I was the pilot monitoring. I declared an emergency and asked for a right turn direct to a nearby airport as briefed in the takeoff brief. We both donned our mask and goggles and I shut the packs off. The first officer flew and talked from there; I completed the QRH cabin fire/smoke and entered but did not finish the QRH smoke removal. I assumed the pilot flying on base leg. We were cleared for the visual and did an overweight landing at 145;000 lbs at 146 kts; soft touchdown; with less than 300 FPM rate of descent at landing. Aircraft was met by airfield rescue and fire fighters on a discrete frequency; checked the aircraft and we then taxied to the gate.
