Narrative:
The self parking system dgs indicated all clear and taxi into the gate. We made the turn in and noticed the 737 [at the gate next to us] wing was very close to the our parking spot. The dgs kept having us taxi in; an off duty ramp worker stopped us. Since we were taxiing in very slowly we stopped and shut and engine down. Two rampers came up and said the aircraft parked at the gate next to us; which also used the dgs; had parked incorrectly and we could not park at our gate safely. We talked to both ramp and ground. Started both engines and did a careful 90 degree turn and was assigned to another gate and later parked safely. If it was a dark and stormy rainy night; we may have not seen the 737 wing; and if not for a sharp ramp worker also running out to the ramp and stopping us; we may have had wing to wing damage. The dgs is unsafe at any airport.
