Narrative:
ZLA center controller had cleared us (medium large transport X) direct rzs, climb to FL230. Passing thru 17000', I called for `altimeters' 29.92 and turned the landing lights off, when I noticed an air carrier small transport Y passing off the left wing at our altitude in the opposite direction. First officer, who was flying the aircraft, saw the small transport Y at the same time. Controller issued traffic advisory to the small transport Y after he had passed us. He never pointed the aircraft out to us. When I asked him if small transport Y was flying VFR, he replied 'yes, VFR on top, thanks for the call' and turned us over to the next frequency. We never heard any advisories for either small transport Y or ourselves about the impending conflict except for the one call described above.

Title: MLG SAW SMT PASS IN CLOSE PROX, NO TRAFFIC ADVISORY FROM ARTCC, SMT VFR ON TOP.
Narrative: ZLA CTR CTLR HAD CLRED US (MLG X) DIRECT RZS, CLB TO FL230. PASSING THRU 17000', I CALLED FOR `ALTIMETERS' 29.92 AND TURNED THE LNDG LIGHTS OFF, WHEN I NOTICED AN ACR SMT Y PASSING OFF THE L WING AT OUR ALT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. F/O, WHO WAS FLYING THE ACFT, SAW THE SMT Y AT THE SAME TIME. CTLR ISSUED TFC ADVISORY TO THE SMT Y AFTER HE HAD PASSED US. HE NEVER POINTED THE ACFT OUT TO US. WHEN I ASKED HIM IF SMT Y WAS FLYING VFR, HE REPLIED 'YES, VFR ON TOP, THANKS FOR THE CALL' AND TURNED US OVER TO THE NEXT FREQ. WE NEVER HEARD ANY ADVISORIES FOR EITHER SMT Y OR OURSELVES ABOUT THE IMPENDING CONFLICT EXCEPT FOR THE ONE CALL DESCRIBED ABOVE.
