Narrative:
Cleared to climb to 12000'. Between 10000-11000' we were given turn from approximately 290 degrees to 020 degrees and soon thereafter to 050 degrees. Passing approximately 340 degrees while in 25 degree banked turn to right, the captain reported seeing an large transport Y at our 10:30 position, approximately 800' below us and passing approximately 2500' behind us. Controller on 118.8 was questioned concerning this large transport Y. Controller said large transport Y had accepted clearance to maintain visual sep from us. We were not given any traffic advisory concerning large transport Y traffic and heard no such advisory or clearance to large transport Y concerning us. Supplemental information from acn 92777: an opp direction air carrier large transport Y appeared at our 10:30 position and passed quickly below and behind us. Large transport Y was in hard right, descending turn away from us. Questioned controller, who said converging headings were noted at 3 NM, but large transport Y had us in sight and accepted clearance to maintain visual sep. We heard none of this on 118.8 and were given no traffic advisory.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR-MLG SAW ACR-LGT PASS IN CLOSE PROX, NO TRAFFIC ADVISORY GIVEN, CTLR SAID VISUAL SEPARATION USED.
Narrative: CLRED TO CLB TO 12000'. BTWN 10000-11000' WE WERE GIVEN TURN FROM APPROX 290 DEGS TO 020 DEGS AND SOON THEREAFTER TO 050 DEGS. PASSING APPROX 340 DEGS WHILE IN 25 DEG BANKED TURN TO RIGHT, THE CAPT RPTED SEEING AN LGT Y AT OUR 10:30 POS, APPROX 800' BELOW US AND PASSING APPROX 2500' BEHIND US. CTLR ON 118.8 WAS QUESTIONED CONCERNING THIS LGT Y. CTLR SAID LGT Y HAD ACCEPTED CLRNC TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEP FROM US. WE WERE NOT GIVEN ANY TFC ADVISORY CONCERNING LGT Y TFC AND HEARD NO SUCH ADVISORY OR CLRNC TO LGT Y CONCERNING US. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 92777: AN OPP DIRECTION ACR LGT Y APPEARED AT OUR 10:30 POS AND PASSED QUICKLY BELOW AND BEHIND US. LGT Y WAS IN HARD RIGHT, DSNDING TURN AWAY FROM US. QUESTIONED CTLR, WHO SAID CONVERGING HDGS WERE NOTED AT 3 NM, BUT LGT Y HAD US IN SIGHT AND ACCEPTED CLRNC TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEP. WE HEARD NONE OF THIS ON 118.8 AND WERE GIVEN NO TFC ADVISORY.
