Narrative:

Two weeks in a row I was the first officer of a crew departing cak in darkness. After pushback from the gate (the south extremity of the airline terminal); I called akron ground for taxi clearance. 'Taxi to runway 1 via a' was the clearance received. At this point the aircraft is on the ramp; facing north-northwest; and the airport diagram clearly indicates that alpha is a spoke taxiway leading off the ramp. Looking out the window; however; there is no sign for alpha anywhere. A taxiway location sign should be expected somewhere near the beginning of the taxiway; but there is nothing. The only means to possibly identify this taxiway is by comparing the relative widths of taxiways C; a; and G from the airport diagram. This is insane; and occurs during a higher workload phase of the flight. We shouldn't condition ourselves to proceed towards a runway without being confident of our location on the airport.
