Narrative:
Last day of a 6 day international trip. After engine start I believe the captain advised to call for taxi. I called ramp and we received taxi clearance. I asked the captain if he wanted me to select flaps 5 and he said yes. Flaps 5 were selected and we began to taxi. We immediately heard a loud 'clonking' noise and the captain braked to a quick stop. Apparently we had not received thumbs up from ground crew and the aircraft nose gear had nudged against the disconnected but not fully removed tow bar. Subsequent investigation verified that there were no injuries to personnel or damage to aircraft. The remainder of the flight was completed without incident. I can not remember if the captain actually reported that he had a 'thumbs up' or not prior to asking for taxi clearance.
