Narrative:
On receiving the clearance; I did not understand the controller and asked twice for him to repeat. He did have a heavy 'new york' accent. I understood one of the fixes to be 'bayse' but was actually 'bayys'. Basye is actually closer to hpn then bayys. As I was climbing out the new york center cleared me direct to the fix. As I rolled out to basye I was handed off to another controller who had me do a turn to 180. He then asked if I was going to bayys and I said basye. He told me I was cleared to bayys and asked why I was going in the wrong direction. I told him I thought it was basye and he said 'all right' and that was the end of the communication. The problem came in as I understood the clearance as being basye instead of bayys and programmed the wrong fix in the FMS. I did not even suspect it was the wrong fix. I am not from the area and since the bayse fix was within easy reach and to the north; away from new york city; I assumed it was for the flow of traffic.
