Narrative:
On initial climbout; we experienced a loud bang and loss of power on the number one engine. We told the tower that we needed to return to the airport and at that time declared an emergency. We contacted the flight attendants to make sure everyone was okay and then made an announcement to the passengers that we would be returning. We conducted the engine failure/shutdown checklist followed by the one engine inoperative landing checklist. We landed uneventfully and taxied to the gate under our own power.
