Narrative:

I was at cruise at 11;500 direct bih and roughly 40 NM northwest of bishop monitoring bih and mmh (mammoth-yosemite) ctafs. I heard an incoming air carrier make his call inbound to mmh. I was about 22 NM from that airport and they were using runway 27 and it occurred to me that I might be near the approach course for a visual. I intensified my look for traffic; then glanced at my TCAS; there was a yellow alert within 200 ft and it appeared right on my position. I then noticed a blur below and just to the front of my left wing. I looked to the right below me and the air carrier aircraft couldn't have passed more than 300 ft directly below towards mmh. I could not see him coming and I was looking.
