Narrative:
We were descending into lax via the seavu 2 with clearance to descend via. We did not get a runway until almost the end of the STAR when the controller gave us 24R. I selected the runway and the transition; but could not close the discontinuity that showed up on the FMC. The pilot flying reselected the same and executed. We both then realized engli was behind us and LNAV had disengaged. About the same time; ATC gave us a vector and cleared us direct to konzl. We then flew the ILS 24R uneventfully to a landing.a moving map would have no doubt prevented this error. ATC should give us more time to program the correct runway arrival.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: Aboard an FMC equipped B737 without a moving map display; the flight crew got distracted and suffered a track deviation when the clearance for the landing runway and transition was received too late for timely programming and was executed only after passing the first fix. The crew lost situational awareness because there was no way for them to perceive their relationship to the fix.
