Narrative:

On departure from cvg we were told to maintain 12000'. Passing 8000' we were told to contact center 127.0. When I contacted center we were cleared to 17000' and upon leaving 12000', 175 degrees direct tys. As we were passing 14500' center told us to level 15000' and stated that he had told us to maintain 14000' previously and had received an acknowledgement. We never received any such clearance. I remember center talking to another aircraft about traffic in the 15000' area. Possibly the climb restriction was given to the wrong aircraft? 17000' was the clearance and was heard by both crew members and a jumpseat rider wearing a headset and was inserted in the altitude alerter. Possible fix: new transponders where center can send written clearance to aircraft--mode south?
