Narrative:
9/88 I flew my small aircraft from sfo area to rno. As always, I followed I80 over the sierras, crossing over truckee then down the canyon over verdi and then direct to rno. Approximately 10 mi west of truckee, I called rno approach control and asked for rno's new ATIS frequency. I told him my position and that I would report in over verdi. Being down in the canyon, I was unable to pick up the ATIS until I was in the vicinity of verdi. When I copied the ATIS, I found that I was in or very near a restr area which was recently formed, because of aircraft which were fighting a fire in the area. The restr area was within a 5 mi radius of a point 18 DME on the 224 degree right of the fmg VOR. When I checked in with approach, again on 119.2, the controller mentioned that I had flown through the restr area. I must admit that I had not checked NOTAMS for rno, and still don't know if the restr area was listed, however I feel that the controller should have mentioned the restr area, when I first told him that I would be flying down the canyon and through it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA FLEW THROUGH A TEMPORARY RESTRICTED AREA SET UP FOR FIREFIGHTING.
Narrative: 9/88 I FLEW MY SMA FROM SFO AREA TO RNO. AS ALWAYS, I FOLLOWED I80 OVER THE SIERRAS, XING OVER TRUCKEE THEN DOWN THE CANYON OVER VERDI AND THEN DIRECT TO RNO. APPROX 10 MI W OF TRUCKEE, I CALLED RNO APCH CTL AND ASKED FOR RNO'S NEW ATIS FREQ. I TOLD HIM MY POS AND THAT I WOULD RPT IN OVER VERDI. BEING DOWN IN THE CANYON, I WAS UNABLE TO PICK UP THE ATIS UNTIL I WAS IN THE VICINITY OF VERDI. WHEN I COPIED THE ATIS, I FOUND THAT I WAS IN OR VERY NEAR A RESTR AREA WHICH WAS RECENTLY FORMED, BECAUSE OF ACFT WHICH WERE FIGHTING A FIRE IN THE AREA. THE RESTR AREA WAS WITHIN A 5 MI RADIUS OF A POINT 18 DME ON THE 224 DEG R OF THE FMG VOR. WHEN I CHKED IN WITH APCH, AGAIN ON 119.2, THE CTLR MENTIONED THAT I HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE RESTR AREA. I MUST ADMIT THAT I HAD NOT CHKED NOTAMS FOR RNO, AND STILL DON'T KNOW IF THE RESTR AREA WAS LISTED, HOWEVER I FEEL THAT THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THE RESTR AREA, WHEN I FIRST TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD BE FLYING DOWN THE CANYON AND THROUGH IT.
