Narrative:
While taxiing into the gate I was following the signals of the marshaller. He was motioning for me to taxi forward. At that time; the first officer slammed on the brakes. Out his side of the window the wing walker was frantically signaling for us to stop. The lead marshaller was still motioning us forward. Thanks to the quick action by the first officer; we stopped about a foot short of a baggage cart. No damage was found on the post flight. We did notice that the front tire was about 6 ft past the crj 200 line; almost but not all the way to the erj 145 parking line. It is possible the ramp agent confused us for a EMB145. Also; he failed to notice the stop signal from his wing walker.
