Narrative:
Cleared for take off; runway heading on 27R. Acknowledged and executed. After take off we retracted gear and called for modes on the fcp during which we encountered wake from the preceding md-88. Flew the initial heading as guided by the command bars of the flight director. After flaps up the first officer (pilot not flying) noticed we were in navigation mode and given a heading. I immediately turned the aircraft to 270. Shortly after tower told us to fly 270 and contact departure. Departure queried us on our tower instructions and we read back 270. He gave us heading 280. A few more turns and we were cleared to a fix.

Title: A RJ flight crew experienced a track deviation on departure from ATL; perhaps caused in part by a wake vortex encounter.
