Narrative:
Trying to contact mia ground for taxi clearance it took my first officer several attempts to get a response from ground. The reason was because this lone controller was handling tower functions for all three runways plus ground control plus later on even issuing an IFR route clearance. I expressed my discomfort with such a marginal operation during taxi out to my first officer since this airport is still very busy at this time of the day. Sure enough; soon we got proof of the deficiency of such an operation. We had just started our take off roll when tower issued us a frequency change to departure. The controller later on apologized for the mistake. Let there be no misunderstanding: I am not criticizing the human who is trying to juggle ten balls or better passenger carrying airliners in the air. Not good and safe.
