Narrative:

Local maintenance informed me that the correct MEL for a B757-200 deferral; item xyz; was 25-28A. I agreed with him and told him to change the MEL reference using [our maintenance computer entry change procedures]. The aircraft was already on a delay. The mechanic changed the MEL reference at and the aircraft departed six minutes later. Approximately twenty minutes later; it was determined that changing to MEL 25-28A caused deferral xyz to be 14-days overdue. It was too late when I discovered this and the aircraft had already departed. At this time; deferral xyz is assigned a high priority [going into] their destination upon arrival.
