Narrative:

While conducting on the job training instruction without a hand off we had a B757 off of newark airport over dixie intersection. The hand off was entered and was not accepted due to an interface failure (if). While training a low hour trainee; I [was] unaware of the if and anticipated that new york center took the hand off due to the fact there was no 'C' in the center of the data tag. I missed this in my scan and then switched the aircraft prior to dixie intersection. I became aware that the hand off was not made moments later and called the center to address the problem. I will take the appropriate steps to fix my scan while trying to get the trainee up to speed.
