Narrative:
On approach; number one oil temperature gauge pegged off scale high. We started the QRH procedure and landed soon after. We shut down the engine; taxied to the gate and entered the item in the logbook. Soon after the write up was entered; the gauge returned to normal. The mechanic took care of the rest and deferred the gauge. Later I discovered the gauge was a required item.
