Narrative:
Climbing above 10;000 ft I noticed the master warning light on glare shield. First officer's placarded inoperative. Annunciator panel had tail compartment temperature hi. We completed the procedure. Light remained illuminated at completion. Declared an emergency with ATC and requested return to the departure airport. Requested airport fire fighting and rescue. During the decent the warning light went out. [We] briefed the crew; prepared for an overweight landing. Airport fire fighting and rescue inspected the aircraft after landing with no findings. Aircraft [was] taken out of service. Repeat item for this aircraft. [We] re-boarded another aircraft for continuation to the scheduled destination.
