Narrative:
Holding short prior to departure had some difficulty communicating with tower. Checked microphone jacks and everything appeared normal. No problems again throughout climb and initial part of cruise. Approximately 200NM west of ZZZ received SELCAL stating hot mike and to contact ATC on another frequency. Reestablished communications with center. Then lost it again. Then com became intermittent while we tried to isolate the problem. When it became apparent that the communication was deteriorating; we decided to initiate diversion to ZZZ approximately 100 NM west of ZZZ. Received clearance for the arrival; and an initial descent clearance. Then communication was lost for the remainder of the flight. Declared emergency through dispatch using ACARS. Informed them that we would fly arrival then direct to the IAF for the ILS xxl. We received WX and performance for xxl and landed uneventfully overweight at approximately 203.0 landing weight. Taxied clear of runway. Followed emergency vehicle to gate.
