Narrative:
I taxied out in front of a landing aircraft at an uncontrolled airport. While I was about to start my takeoff roll; I saw him fly over me. As I was taxiing out onto the runway; I heard an aircraft with a very poor radio say something nearly unintelligible; but which I thought was an intention to wait to cross the active runway. I checked final and didn't see anyone; but did see someone on a taxiway about half way down the runway that appeared to be holding. As I added power; I heard the same aircraft say something; to which I replied that he had a bad radio and was unintelligible. As I began my roll I then heard what might have been a response but was the sound of two radios stepping on each other. I then stated 'you were stepped on'; and at that time I saw an airplane pass over me; slightly to the right of the runway about two hundred feet above me. It appeared to be an experimental aircraft; maybe a thorp; which I had observed earlier doing touch and go's. What caught my attention then was the pattern this person was flying. At cxp there is a noise abatement procedure which involves flying an extended downwind before turning base; but this aircraft seemed to be flying a very short and close in base to final. In retrospect; this explains why I didn't see him when I checked for traffic on final. Usually if I hear traffic on the unicom; I turn a 360 in the run up area before taking the runway. I think because this aircraft's transmissions were so weak and garbled I assumed that either it was a plane with a bad radio holding for me; or was an aircraft talking to a distant airport pattern and I didn't do the 360 scan I would normally. From now on if I have even a hint that there is someone else in the pattern; I will do my 360.

Title: A home built pilot taxis into position at CXP to hear and see another light aircraft going around at low altitude. A garbled radio transmission had been heard prior to taking the runway but no traffic was visible on final.
