Narrative:
On originating preflight; the first officer found a pair of locking pliers (vise grip type) in the number one engine exhaust bypass duct holding the thrust reverser translating sleeves together on the lower aft area of the bypass duct. First officer took the pliers to the captain and asked if he would call the on-duty maintenance supervisor to the aircraft. The supervisor was called and shown the pair of pliers. First officer showed the supervisor where the pliers were found and a photo was taken by the supervisor. A logbook entry was made. Maintenance inspected the entire aircraft. Captain and supervisor preformed another walk around. Aircraft/crew/passengers flew first leg uneventfully.this was an unauthorized tool and therefore had no accountability.
