Narrative:
After departing 13R at psp; we were cleared direct deway via a left turn climbing to 10;000 ft. Controller asked if we wanted 10;000 ft or 12;000 ft and we said we would take either. He assigned 10;000 ft and said he could clear us to the kayoh four arrival to sna if we were ready for it. We replied affirmatively and brought the arrival up on the FMS. He then cleared us direct dejay direct kayoh (at least that's what we thought he said; and that is how we read it back). Dejay is the fix on the arrival prior to kayoh. It was clear that the heading to dejay would not provide proper terrain clearance; and as we were about to call him to confirm his prior instructions; when he asked us to turn right to 330 degrees and then further right to 360 degrees; direct deway. The confusion on this leg was caused by the unfortunate similarity of the two fixes - deway and dejay. We strongly urge a review of these names and hope that one will be changed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GIV Captain reports being confused by two similar sounding fix names (DEWAY and DEJAY) during a departure from SPS with an arrival to SNA. Turning toward DEJAY when the clearance was to DEWAY results in a conflict with terrain; which is detected by both the crew and ATC.
