Narrative:
After takeoff first officer noticed number 1 hydraulic quantity was below 1 quart. [We] consulted emergency checklist for anticipated caution lights. Number 1 rud iso valve light came on then went out. Number 1 quantity went to zero. Number 1 hydraulic pump caution light came on and shortly there after other lights associated with system failure came on. [We] completed the emergency checklist. Declared an emergency and returned to the departure airport for a zero flap landing. [We] notified flight attendant; passengers and operations; did not brace passengers. Landed without incident and taxied to gate.

Title: A DHC8-100's number one hydraulic system failed after takeoff so the emergency checklist was completed; an emergency declared and the flight returned to the departure airport for a safe landing.
