Narrative:

[I] was changing a bleed valve and checking another check valve on #2 engine. I was the only one working this erj-170 airplane until my shift ended early in the morning. This is the second time doing this job and was having problems with some clamps. [I] left a hammer in the engine compartment. [I] had a bad thought after coming home and sleeping about never putting hammer in tool box. Went to work [that night] to check tool box; never found hammer; so I told supervisor about the lost tool. Plane is to overnight in ZZZ and he would notify night shift supervisor about lost tool. Suggest having a second set of eyes before closing engine cowls.
