Narrative:
Jumpseat rider spotted converging traffic 10-11 O'clock, same altitude (small transport) at a 90 degree angle to our southerly heading. Captain and first officer reacted simultaneously by disengaging autoplt and climbing above traffic, which was banked to the right 45-60 degrees and turning from west to north. Traffic passed below and left of our left wing. Subsequent radio contact with approach control verified traffic no code/VFR code altitude readout 10300' (not previously reported). Our evasive pull up, straight ahead, entailed 1000' from descent to abrupt 1000' FPM climb with some passenger on the left side of the plane witnessing the encounter. Resumed descent to 1000' as assigned and continued to destination. Landed west/O incident. Note: incident occurred seconds after a F/a closed the cockpit door following the request of change of a $20 bill. Both pilots were momentarily distracted.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BETWEEN ACR-MLG AND UNK-SMT.
Narrative: JUMPSEAT RIDER SPOTTED CONVERGING TFC 10-11 O'CLOCK, SAME ALT (SMT) AT A 90 DEG ANGLE TO OUR SOUTHERLY HDG. CAPT AND F/O REACTED SIMULTANEOUSLY BY DISENGAGING AUTOPLT AND CLBING ABOVE TFC, WHICH WAS BANKED TO THE RIGHT 45-60 DEGS AND TURNING FROM W TO N. TFC PASSED BELOW AND LEFT OF OUR LEFT WING. SUBSEQUENT RADIO CONTACT WITH APCH CTL VERIFIED TFC NO CODE/VFR CODE ALT READOUT 10300' (NOT PREVIOUSLY RPTED). OUR EVASIVE PULL UP, STRAIGHT AHEAD, ENTAILED 1000' FROM DSCNT TO ABRUPT 1000' FPM CLB WITH SOME PAX ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PLANE WITNESSING THE ENCOUNTER. RESUMED DSCNT TO 1000' AS ASSIGNED AND CONTINUED TO DEST. LANDED W/O INCIDENT. NOTE: INCIDENT OCCURRED SECS AFTER A F/A CLOSED THE COCKPIT DOOR FOLLOWING THE REQUEST OF CHANGE OF A $20 BILL. BOTH PLTS WERE MOMENTARILY DISTRACTED.
