Narrative:
We were on a gate hold when a thunderstorm with hail; rain; and lightning passed through. I spoke with maintenance control and asked about an inspection. Maintenance control told me that if we saw no visible damage on a walk around/preflight inspection we were good to go without a maintenance inspection. We found no damage during our walk around. Upon returning the next morning with the same aircraft; maintenance may have found damage.
