Narrative:

At FL380 experienced a loud bump (felt like an engine stall) followed by fumes in the cockpit. Smelled like burning electrical. The flight attendants called and reported smoke and fumes in the cabin. We declared and emergency and turned east toward the VOR. Fumes subsided during the turn at FL360. We elected to continue past significant weather to the airport which was in the clear. No engine or other malfunctions were noted. Landed and had fire chief check the aircraft when cleared taxied clear of the runway and to gate.

Title: B757 crew experienced a loud bump; like a compressor stall; at FL380 which was followed shortly by smoke and fumes in the aircraft. The engine continued to run normally and the smoke began to clear but the Captain diverted to a suitable airport.
