Narrative:
At about 1430 I was assigned a 0400 reserve short call status for the next day. Knowing we had tight reserve coverage and open flying; I was expecting a call for a flying assignment shortly after 0400. I planned accordingly and went to bed early; but did not sleep well. At 0400 I got a call from the crew desk to reset my rest period; and go into rest for a 1600 departure [for a three leg trip] with a duty period of 9:14 and last landing at midnight. I tried to fall asleep after the 0400 call; but was not successful in getting rest. I wish I was able to 'reset' my body clock and sleep 6-8 hours in the daytime! But I knew I was not going to be safely rested to fly 3 legs into the night; so I called in fatigued. It felt awkward making the call before reporting for duty; but it was the only way to fix what I know would have been an unnecessary safety compromise. It was a legal assignment and looked ok on paper; but was extremely poor scheduling especially when I know we had reserves in rest periods for late night flying. Furthermore; when we have or rest periods 'reset' there is no paper trail; my schedule looked as if I was not assigned a 0400 short call; just a 1600 departure.
