Pushed off gate right generator wouldn't pick up right bus; referred to QRH; captain called maintenance control; secured right generator; departed; after level off APU failed; diverted to another airport. Title: MD83 flight crew reports being dispatched with an inoperative generator and the APU running as the second source of AC power. At level off the APU fails and the flight diverts to the nearest suitable airport for an overweight landing.
Narrative: Pushed off gate right generator wouldn't pick up right bus; referred to QRH; Captain called Maintenance Control; secured right generator; departed; after level off APU failed; diverted to another airport. Declared Emergency due to overweight landing (140;000 LBS.) requested ARFF; taxied to gate with no problems.
