Narrative:
On descent for landing we got an EICAS left engine ovht message and warning light. We accomplished the QRH procedure and noted that once the throttle was at idle the overheat light went out. We declared an emergency with approach control; asked for longest runway and; as a precaution; fire trucks standing by. After landing crash fire rescue equipment inspected the engine and advised it looked ok so we canceled the emergency; shutdown the engine and taxied normally to the gate.
